The clinic
This is the page for people already in Hamilton, which means the travel question does not apply and the useful content is simply what happens here and what does not.
What is here
An examination, a grade, and a plan with a number attached. That is the deliverable of a first appointment here, and a visit that produces fewer than those three has not finished its job. Most of the half hour is conversation; the anoscopy itself is a couple of minutes.
The procedures done in this building are the office ones: banding, infrared coagulation and sclerotherapy, in a clinic room, without a general anaesthetic. Surgical routes are arranged rather than performed here, which is the practical dividing line between the two.
What is not done here is treating bleeding nobody has looked at. The first visit page lists the four answers you leave with, and red flags lists the findings that get a referral instead of a procedure, and the treatments hub covers everything that is offered once a grade is established.
A visit here
A sentence about bleeding, lumps or itching, plus your plan details so coverage is settled beforehand.
Ten minutes of questions including the family history ones, then a brief anoscopy to establish the grade.
Which procedures your grade allows, how many sessions a course would run to, and what it will cost.
Nothing is booked on the spot unless you want it. Taking the figures away to think about is normal.
What we decline
A clinic that treats absolutely everything presenting in this area is not being careful about it. Blood mixed through the stool rather than sitting on its surface, bleeding beyond a week or returning after it had stopped, a change in stool habit, unexplained weight loss: all of those get an assessment rather than a band.
So do age over forty-five and a family history of colorectal cancer, both of which reorder the plan rather than ruling treatment out altogether. Being on blood thinners changes both how bleeding is read and what can safely be done about it, so that is worth saying early rather than late.
All of that is published rather than left to judgement on the day. Red flags is the list in full, referrals covers both directions, and bleeding covers what the examination looks for.
