From Brampton
The way a trip gets wasted is almost never clinical. It is arriving to discover that coverage was not checked, a referral was needed, or a medication should have been mentioned. Four things, all sortable in advance.
Four things
Coverage, because nobody should drive in to find out at a desk what their plan pays toward a consultation. The referral question, because it is set by your plan rather than by us. Your medication list, blood thinners in particular. And whether any of the four screening exclusions applies to you.
None of those four is clinical and all of them can waste a journey. Three of them are answered by sending your plan details and your medication list with the booking, which takes a few minutes and removes the commonest cause of a trip going to waste.
The fourth of them is a conversation rather than a form to fill in beforehand. Preparing for a procedure covers the screening exclusions in full, insurance and coverage covers what gets checked and how, and referrals covers the second.
Before you drive
With the booking rather than on the day. Coverage and the referral requirement sit in the same document.
Everything, including over-the-counter. Blood thinners change the risk picture and sometimes the procedure.
Pregnancy, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, anything affecting your immune system. Early, not on arrival.
What your plan pays, whether a referral is needed, and what it has to cover. All before you set off.
What goes wrong
The usual version of this is a referral that nobody mentioned. A plan requires one, the clinic assumed it did not, and a visit goes ahead that the plan then declines to pay anything toward. That is a paperwork failure with a travel cost attached, and it is entirely preventable by checking first.
The second version is blood thinners disclosed on the day. They change how bleeding is interpreted and sometimes which procedure is appropriate, so finding out at the appointment can mean a plan that has to be reworked afterwards rather than during.
Neither of those is a clinical problem and both of them cost you an entire journey. Do I need a referral covers the first one, the first visit page lists what to bring so the second does not happen, and coverage covers the check itself.
